Health & Fitness Tips
In today's culture of youth gymnastics, gymnasts are
accumulating a larger total volume of practices and competition
than in years past.
Studies have shown that intensive aerobic and
anaerobic training can produce a negative nitrogen balance in the
body. This can lead to loses in lean body mass that include
enzymatic proteins and antibodies; consequently, increasing the
chance of a potential sickness or injury developing
First of all, gymnasts should be aware of long,
physically exhausting practice sessions and/or meets that take
place without adequate recovery and rest. Other techniques,
such as stress management, massage, adequate sleep and proper diet
have also been shown in studies to reduce the overtraining
syndrome. By following these strategies, gymnasts are more
likely to avoid stress and overtraining, thus having the ability to
perform gymnastics with high energy levels.
In addition, it should be a high priority for athletes
to receive adequate calories and protein intake to match their
energy expenditure. Athletes, in generally, have a higher
need for protein than their sedentary counterparts.
Most gymnast need to consume anywhere from 7-12oz of lean
meat (chicken, fish, turkey) per day. Protein helps to
maintain and build muscle by providing a positive nitrogen balance
as mentioned earlier. To stay injury free and to continue to
increase performance, gymnast must remember to alter nutrition to
match your increased expenditure.
Therefore, when training and practice become more
intense be sure to get proper sleep, nutrition, and time for
relaxation are occurring to keep your body in top shape for
performance.

Preschool Program News
Benefits of Gymnastics
For Preschool Aged Children
You may ask why you should
have your children participate in Edge's Preschool Gymnastics
Program.... The benefits of gymnastics are not limited to
just body development. Research provides evidence that physical
fitness is associated with cognitive learning and academic
achievement in young children. When enrolled in a Preschool
gymnastics class, you can expect to see improvement in both
physical and cognitive development in your child. You may observe
coaches at Edge Gymnastics playing and running around with a group
of children in a class, but in retrospect, realize the coach is
actually preparing the children for successful experiences in
school. Studies show that children who participate in movement
education activities such as gymnastics, have longer attention
spans, increased communication skills, general problem solving
skills and improved self-esteem and confidence.

addressing the benefits of Preschool Gymnastics, please click here Benefits of
Gymnastics.
